Pipe rehabilitation is that aspect of trenchless rehabilitation that undertakes the repair or replacement of sewer and water pipelines that run under a city or town, connecting homes, offices and industries to the municipal sewer network or water connection. Trenchless technology enables repair and replacement with little to no digging required. Pipe rehabilitation can usually be carried out from manholes. There are different methods for trenchless rehabilitation of pipes which are cost effective, quick, reliable, and long lasting. Trenchless methods are becoming popular because they are non disruptive and eco-friendly.

Given the poor condition of our aging infrastructure, some form of trenchless technology is often selected as the most economical and least disruptive way to rehabilitate America’s pipelines.

Pipelines of nominal diameter (1 inch or 2.5 cm) up to 96 inches (2.4 m) can easily be lined using polyurea spray elastomer technology with robotic application systems. Robotic application development works hand-in-hand with special-performance modified polyurea systems, which have been fine-tuned, allowing for application thickness of up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) in thickness in a single pass. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over $1 trillion will be required over the next 25 years to restore buried water and wastewater lines due to age and deterioration, and almost $350 billion will be required to recover potable and drinking water lines. This does not include all of the buried and in-use steam and chemical pipelines altered by age. 

Slip lining and pipe bursting typically provides a new, independent pipe that will result in a structural trenchless pipe solution. Depending on the type and condition of the host pipe, flow capacity can often be maintained or improved.

Polyurea technology is not new to pipelining work, with basic applications dating back more than 15 years. Much of this work was performed by hand spraying (large diameter pipe) or simple robotic systems for individual joint sections of pipe. 

Pipeline Rehabilitation and Relining

Pipe bursting and cured-in-place pipe lining are proven methods for renewing aging and deteriorated pipes. Here are several systems and tools that employ these technologies, along with excavation, pipe piercing and cutting, shoring, and horizontal directional drilling tools used to expose entry points and install new pipe.
